HOLT COLLIER // A MUST LISTEN TO STORY

Teddy Roosevelt getting to pose in a photo with Holt Collier (back right) during an epic bear hunt in the Mississippi Delta. There’s something to be said when TR thinks you are the most interesting man in the world.

I had never heard of Holt Collier until hearing his story told on the MeatEater Bear Grease Podcast. It’s probably deliberate that more people don’t know about him because it’s a wild story and hard to comprehend. Holt was a slave from Mississippi and fought for the Confederates where he became one of Nathan Bedford Forest’s most trusted scouts. After the war he headed over to Texas to lay low (the reason is fascinating) and became a cowboy for one of the state’s most famous Texas Rangers and early Governors…and that was him just getting started in life.

Clay Newcomb and guests do a fantastic job telling the story in Ep. 68 & Ep. 70 (links below). It’s a must listen to story!
